About Bill Moody

William E. “Bill” Moody, Jr.

Bill Moody

I am a Portsmouth native and one of 9 children of Bill & Betty Moody.  I attended Portsmouth Public Schools but due to an annexation graduated from Western Branch High School.  I spent most of my youth in the communities of Port Norfolk, Park View, and Park Manor.  My wife Ginny and I have been married for 46 years and we have 3 children Cindy, Bill III, and Aston.  I have served my hometown as a council member since 1998 and I’ve also served as Portsmouth Vice-Mayor for two, 2-year terms.

Soon after high school, I joined the air force and served as a Loadmaster on a C-130.  Following the military, I began my business career at Doughtie’s Barbecue, a beloved Portsmouth fixture.  I started out as a truck driver and worked my way up to become Vice-President of Sales and an officer of the company.  My hard work directly contributed to Doughtie’s becoming the nation’s 48th largest foodservice distributor before I departed in 1999.

Following the sale of Doughtie’s, I  spent 10 years with US Foods, the second largest food distributor in the United States, where I was Vice-President of National Accounts and Healthcare responsible for sales budgets up to 40 million dollar annual budgets.  I am very proud to have been part of a team that grew sales from approximately 3 million to close to 100 million dollars!

My Pledge to Portsmouth

As a Council Member, one of my most important abilities is the power of inquiry, asking questions!  As a councilman, I speak up and ask the questions that I feel you want to have answered.

“You have my pledge, I will always ask the tough questions and continue to champion projects that make sense for our entire city!”

“I will be a defender of transparency and I will not shy away from my duties as your public servant.”

While others may claim they support transparency, I am the only member of the city council (and the only candidate) who has proven this!  I took action in 1996 and fought an overbearing mayor over my right to share closed session information with the people of Portsmouth. The judge’s decision proves the fact that the people have a right to know!
